How To Make a Rainbow Braid

A rainbow braid is simply a small french braid that wraps around your head like a headband. It looks complicated, but when you practice your french braiding skills, it becomes natural. If you have never done a french braid, I recommend learning how to do that first, before attempting a rainbow braid- but by all means, give it a shot anyway! I really love this simple look because it can dress up an outfit, whether you are wearing casual or formal attire. Check out the video below to learn how to make a rainbow braid.

Having trouble viewing the video? Here is a video summary just for you!

Step 1: Using a pick comb (I like to use a bobby pin), part your hair. Begin behind one ear and section the hair by moving your comb all the way over the top of your head until you reach behind your opposite ear. If you have thin hair, make this section a little wider and thicker to create a larger braid.

Step 2: Tie or clip the larger section of hair that you will not be using in your braid behind your head with a ponytail or clip.

Step 3: Begin your french braid. Choose the side of your head you wish to begin the braid. Grab a small section of hair and separate three strands of hair. Begin your french braid by crossing the three strands and adding hair as you go around your head.

*TIP: Be careful how you add hair to you braid. The more careful and organized you are as you add hair to the braid, the better the braid will look in the end.

Step 4: When you have braided almost completely around your head, adjust you hands so that you can finish the braid with ease. Place the finished braid behind your ear and secure with bobby pins.

*TIP: Place your bobby pins behind your ear so they remain hidden. Criss-cross the bobby pins in an "X" shape to create a more secure hold.

Step 5: You are finished! Untie the ponytail that is holding your other hair back.

To change things up, you can loosen your braid by pulling on the strands to make the braid appear larger. Always finish with some hair spray!

Optional: Straighten or curl your hair and tease the top of your head to give yourself some volume!

Happy braiding!
